Editioning ‘a kinship’ (ode to Nanny C)

Decided on name today and it feels good. No direct mention of Nanny on the print but still a connection to her.

Decided to choose one for us as “Artist Proof”; one as “trial proof” as paper is ripped a bit and an edition of 10.

Forgot to file notes on final two layers.

They were these:

Layer 9. Opaque white 70% + Prussian Blue. Helped even out the background and cover the purple halo a bit more. Maybe 1 more later though each layer risks prints not registering properly. Calculated risk.

Julia from The Gallery came to help. She helped a bit and then I got her set up to carve.

Layer 8 completed on all 12 prints.
Was opaque white (60%) and Prussian blue (40%)
Mom helped me print 9. We enjoyed it and took a coffee break at The Gallery in the middle.

Ode to Nanny C-April 7 and 9th

On the 7th, I carved away stems and leaves.  1.5hrs plus more carving needed on the 9th.

Did colour testing with opaque white, titanium white and found much better coverage with Akua vs tri-art Titanium white.  Added Prussian blue to opaque white and got a rich teal which really works.  Prints might need 2-3 layers to cover up bleeds from previous steps!

Aunt Anne helped.
We completed the dark green for leaves and stems.
This was layer 7: burnt Sienna and oxide green

Just completed Layer 6 and it worked out well. TBD how well the eventual background layers will cover up the ink that is outside the leaves and flowers.  I am hoping that under shading will help give dimension. Excited to see.

Ink was 70 % oxide green and 30 % Hansa yellow

Between yesterday and today I completed layer 5: burgundy.

Right side shows how much the burgundy layer adds.

Printed layer 4 today: crimson red.  Am not as focussed on the flowers having “rust” coloured edges as I am hopeful that once I carve away the entire flower and print a few more layers of background that the focus will be how vibrant the orange and red petals are. We’ll see!

Tried to improve the “margins” of the orange flowers to cover up the rust colour. Didn’t succeed after hours of experimenting.
